Before your procedure
A little preparation makes your procedure day much more straightforward. In the week before surgery, stop wearing contact lenses and remove false eyelashes or extensions, making sure all glue is removed.
On the day itself, skip make-up, perfume or aftershave, tea, coffee and energy drinks, and keep your nails short and free of extensions.
Please eat something beforehand, complete your online consent form in advance, and bring non-prescription sunglasses and painkillers for the journey home. You will need to arrange a lift, as you will not be able to drive, and we ask that you arrive on time.

If something does not feel right
A little discomfort, dryness or blurred vision in the first day or two is normal and should ease.
But if you notice any of these signs, contact the clinic or the out-of-hours emergency line straight away. Do not wait for your next appointment.
Contact us straight away if you notice:

- An opaque discharge
- A sudden deterioration in vision
- Excessive redness

Common questions about preparing for your procedure and recovering afterwards.
It depends on your procedure: typically from 2 days for LASIK, 5 days for PRK and 4 to 7 days for lens surgery. Where a range is given, your post-operative appointments will confirm whether you can return sooner.
Usually 24 to 48 hours after LASIK, 5 to 7 days after PRK and 4 to 7 days after lens surgery. Always wait until your optometrist has confirmed that your vision meets the legal standard for driving.
Avoid contact lenses for a week beforehand, skip make-up, perfume and stimulants such as tea or coffee on the day, eat something before you come, and arrange a lift rather than driving yourself. Your clinic team will give you the full pre-surgery advice document, which sets out everything in detail.
Most patients are prescribed an antibiotic drop, an anti-inflammatory drop and a lubricant drop, on a tapering schedule over the following weeks. The exact drops, doses and timings differ by procedure, and the aftercare guide you are given sets out the schedule that applies to you.
As a general guide, avoid exercise for 1 week, swimming for 2 weeks and contact sports for 4 weeks after LASIK. Timings vary by procedure, so check the return-to-activities guidance for the procedure you have had.
Contact the clinic straight away, or the out-of-hours emergency line if it is outside normal clinic hours, if you experience severe pain, an opaque discharge, a sudden deterioration in vision or excessive redness. Do not wait for your next appointment.
